Johnny "The Jet" Wins Modified Main at Eagle Raceway's Fan Appreciation Night
May 29th, 2010

The IMCA Modified feature begin with a melee in turns 3 & 4, resulting in Matt Richards’ 1R and the 30 of Jordan Grabouski coming to a stop and sending Grabouski and the 13 of Doug Deterding to the pits and Richards to the rear of the field. When a lap was officially completed Larry Robinson’s 48, the 76 of Lance Borgman, the 00 of Tim Pickens and Chad Anderson’s 8C were out front. Shane Hiatt, last week’s winner moved past Anderson on the third lap, but was moved back when Roger Hadan brought his #4 into fourth. Pickens took over second on the next lap with Hiatt regaining fourth. Hadan looped his racer in turns 3 & 4 with 11 laps remaining. That moved Dan Nelson’s 94 into fourth. Johnny Saathoff, who’s 96J had to transfer through the B Feature after dropping out on lap #1 of his heat race, used the restart to get past Nelson for fourth.

Saathoff was on the move again the next lap as he grabbed second. Grabouski was making a furious comeback as he got to fourth with 10 left. Saathoff snared the lead on the next lap. Mike Densberger spun his #81 the next time around, brining out the yellow. At that time the top four was Saathoff, Robinson, Pickens and Grabouski. Grabouski took second with 7 laps left as Robinson pulled into the infield. From there to the end Grabouski and Saathoff swapped places in the running order as the two battled back and forth with Grabouski taking the lead after he made contact with Saathoff with 2 to go. Saathoff would make the pass for the win on the last circuit.

After the races, Johnny said “The fuel flapper broke in my heat, causing me to lose fuel pressure and making me pull in in my heat. That meant that I had to start on the back row of the B, next to 2009 IMCA National Champion Dylan Smith. But, somehow I pulled off the win in that race so that I could start 10th in the feature. Jordan moved up to second with 7 to go and then, as they say ‘The race was on’. We had good slide jobs, and good door banging leading to a great race. I had a GREAT time, probably more so because I won” Saathoff said. Saathoff’s sponsors include Probe Industries, Penner Insurance, Toobie’s Lumber, BRAD, Bell, JR Motorsports and Jet Racing.
